Forty years ago, a group of ladies having singing lessons with Cassandra Bosustow got together to sing at the Church at the Lizard and so began the St Cecelia Singers – which later evolved into what is now known as the Pentyr Singers.
In the beginning, Roger Bosustow was the Conductor and the choir were singing music of a high quality including Madrigal for which they won awards at Camborne and County Music Festivals. As time went on, more popular music was introduced for local concerts, some of which we are still singing today.
After a few years, it was decided to put on a performance of Stainers Crucifixion, and for this, men were needed. After the successful performance, the men stayed and it has been a mixed voice choir ever since.
When Roger left to teach in Bude, Joyce Robson took over and the rehearsal venue moved to Trewennack Sunday School, which was still where we met until the Chapel closed. Sarah Curnow joined the choir and was then asked if she would conduct for a little while as Joyce had other commitments. That was around 30 years ago and we are pleased to say that she is still our Musical Director.
There have been a number of accompanists over the years, including ‘Mrs Bou’, Betty Gripper, Rosemary Hereford, Margaret Bilkey, Paul Benney and now David Wingham, who have all bought their own style and energy to the choir. We meet on Wednesday evenings at Wendron Primary School at 7.30 pm.
We always welcome new members – drop us a line by emailing xxx@xxx.co.uk if you are interested in coming along to try out our choir, or you can drop us a message on our Facebook page.
Our repertoire is diverse and includes a wide range of musical pieces from different genres and time periods. From classical choral works to contemporary compositions, we enjoy exploring various styles of music to offer a rich and engaging experience to our audiences.
We have a varied Christmas programme for the festive season and we enjoy adding some new songs to this each year.
